Land Rover

Ford-owned Land Rover originated in 1948 as a part of the British automaker, Rover. Designer Maurice Wilks based his concept, the Series I, on an American World War II Jeep vehicle.

Rover was later purchased by the European Leyland Motor Limited which would change its name to British Leyland. When the company was nationalized, Land Rover became its own brand, Land Rover Leyland Group. The now Rover Group would be purchased by BMW in 1995 where, after several years of trying to invigorate the company, sold Land Rover to Ford Motor Co. in 2000.

Land Rover is part of Fords' Premier Automotive Group which includes such marques as Jaguar and Volvo. Aston Martin, which had been a part of the group, was recently sold to a consortium led by Prodrive.

The first Land Rover to debut in the U.S. was the Range Rover. After its arrival in 1970, the all-new Land Rover Discovery went on sale two years afterwards. Under BMW's owner, Land Rover acquired its more luxurious status which continues to this day. The SUV boom in the '90s added to its popularity.

Besides the Range Rover and Discovery, other well-known Rovers include the Freelander and the Defender. The automaker debut its first concept vehicle, the Range Stormer, at the 2004 North American International Auto show.

mini

The first Minis were produced by the British Motor Corporation (BMC) in response to a fuel shortage affecting Britain in the '50s. Sir Alec Issigonis designed the first Minis under then BMC head, Leonard Lord.

The car was sold by BMC's Austin and Morris brands under various names. The first Mini to be sold under the now familar moniker, though, would not appear until 1961.

MINIs would cross the Atlantic into the U.S. around 1962 (though earlier versions were sold in 1960). Though the Mini sold well, federal emission laws had it pulled in 1968.

In 1961, John Cooper, designer and builder of Formula 1 and rally cars and owner of the Cooper Car Company, took a liking of the Cooper and, after obtaining the reluctant help of Issigonis, built the first Mini Coopers.

In 2000, BMW obtained MINI as part of its acquisition of Rover. The German company revitalized the cars and brand, bringing the marque (now called MINI) back to the U.S. market in 2002 where it continues to sell well.

Besides the MINI and MINI Cooper, future plans include the return of the Clubman. The original Mini Clubman was subcompact car; the new version, which is schedule to go on sale within the next two years, may be the brand's first SUV/crossover.

Kia

Kia Motors was founded in 1944 as the Kyungsung Precision Industry and is considered South Korea's oldest automakers. Kyungsung first manufactured bicycles and steel tubing; later, it switched to bicycles, cars, and trucks. Kyungsung would change its name to Kia (translated roughly as "arise" or "Rising out of Asia") in 1952.

The Ford Aspire is Kia's first vehicle sold in the U.S. which it co-produced with Ford Motor Co. Kia's first wholly own U.S. vehicle was the Kia Sephia which debuted in 1994.

Kia Motors went bankrupt in 1997 where it was quickly swallowed up by Hyundai Motor Co. to create the Hyundai Kia Automotive Group.

Many of today's Kia's are rebadged versions of Hyundai vehicles. Some of the more well-known Kias include the Kia Spectra (Hyundai Elantra), Sportage SUV (Hyundai Tuscan); and Sedona minivan (Hyundai Entourage). Some of the brand's future plans include the all-new Soul crossover; the ex_cee'd convertible; and an Audi TT competitor. While a production version of the Soul is scheduled to debut and go on sale next year, there is no word yet if the convertible has been approved for sale. The unnamed TT competitor will debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show later this year.

Hyundai

The Hyundai Motor Company was established in 1967, the automotive arm of the Hyundai "chaebol", or conglomerate company.

The Cortina, the company's first vehicle, was co-developed with Ford Motor Co. in 1968. The American automaker sold the mid-sized sedan primarily in European and Asian markets. Hyundai's first fully-developed car, the Pony, debuted in 1975.

The Hyundai Excel, the company's wholly-owned vehicle, debuted in the U.S. market in 1986. Due to its staggeringly low price, buyers snapped it up and the vehicle set a record (over 168,000) as the most imports sold at its debut. Unfortunately, the Excel's questionable quality led to ridicule, and Hyundai discontinued sales in 1989.

The company, though, didn't leave the U.S. market. In 1988, Hyundai introduced the Sonata mid-sized sedan in the U.S. In the late Nineties, Hyundai, to help it offset its damaged reputation, enacted its now famous "10 year or 100,000 powertrain warranty". It also poured resources to improve its vehicles' quality and luxury while investigating ways to keep prices low.

Hyundai acquired Kia Motor Co. in 1986 after it went bankrupt to create the Hyundai Kia Automotive Group.

Other Hyundai vehicles known, besides the Sonata, include the entry level Accent and the Entourage minivan. New vehicles include the Santa Fe SUV and even larger Veracruz. In 2004, J.D. Power and Associates ranked Hyundai in second in initial quality and the automaker continues to score highly in other tests.

The automaker recently debuted a new sedan concept, Genesis, which many reporters believe signal Hyundai's intention to enter the luxury market in competition with Toyota's Lexus brand.

HUMMER

HUMMER is a brand name developed by AM General and sold to General Motors in 1983. Based off the High Mobility Multi-Purpose Wheeled Vehicle (the now famous Humvee), the first HUMMER, designated "H1" by GM, debuted in 1992 to a shocked public. The model was discontinued in 2006 though AM General continues to produce them for fleet sales.

The H2 went on sale in 2003. Though sharing the same platform as GM's Chevrolet Tahoe and the GMC Yukon pickups, the H2 is assembled by AM General. A pickup version, the H2 SUT, is also available.

Unlike the H1 and H2, the H3 is solely built by GM. Manufactured at the automaker's Shreveport, Mississippi plant, the H3 is built on the same truck platform as the Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon. While the standard H3 is an SUV, there is a pickup version: the HUMMER H3T.

Both the H2 and H3 are considerable smaller than the H1. GM continues to market, sell, and support all three vehicles.

It is unknown at this time if GM plans to go ahead with an even smaller HUMMER, named the H4, at this time

Mercedes-Benz

The Mercedes-Benz brand was officially formed in 1926 with the merger of Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft (DMG) and Benz & Cie. (Daimler-Benz). However, its history goes back further: in 1886, Karl Benz rolled out what he called the "the Benz Patent Motor Car", a three-wheeled vehicle which is, today, considered the world's first automobile. Daimler, though, is accredited with building the world's first modern internal combustion engine. Maybach would later build the first Mercedes, named after the daughter of one of DMG's investors.

In 1998, Daimler-Benz and American automaker Chrysler Corporation merged to form DaimlerChrysler.

The company quickly developed a reputation of technical excellence and innovation. The Mercedes-Benz 170, which debuted in 1931, came with the world's first our-wheel independent suspension. Many of today's safety features, such as "crumple zones", anti-lock brakes, and traction control, were developed by the company.

Besides safety, the brand is also known for its vehicles' luxury and powerful engines. The latter was cemented when Mercedes-Benz entered a partnership with performance company AMG in the 90's. Today, there is virtually an AMG-version of every Mercedes vehicle.

The automaker, with such a long history, has an equally long list of vehicles. Well-known Mercedes-Benz include the E-Class sedan; the flagship S-Class, the M-Class SUV; and SLR McLaren.

Volvo

The Volvo Group, or AB Volvo, was founded in 1927 in Sweden, a subsidary of Svenska Kullagerfabriken AB (SKF), a roller ball bearing manufacturer. The Volvo OV 4, a convertible, was the company's first car.

Assar Gabrielsson and Gustaf Larson consciously made the decision to develop a car whose brand was safety. Though most safety features found in cars today, such as the 3-point seatbelt, anti-lock brakes, and airbags, were developed by Mercedes-Benz, Volvo develop a reputation as the company with "The" safest cars.

The PV444 established the automaker's foothold in the U.S. automobile market. Other well-known vehicles include the Volvo Amazon, 240, and the C70.

The Volvo Group later expanded into the commercial sector, manufacturing buses, trucks, and other such vehicles. In 1998, Volvo sold its automobile section to Ford Motor Company, which added it to its Premier Automotive Group, or PAG. Currently the group consists of Jaguar, Land Rover, and Volvo. Aston Martin, which had been a member of the group, was recently sold to a consortium owned by Prodrive while Lincoln was pulled out in 2002.

Volvo continues to expand its range of vehicles. It released the C70, a stylish hardtop, last year. In 2007, the youthful C30 went on sale in the U.S. The marque has also unveiled a new crossover concept, the XC60, at the 2007 North American International Auto Show in Detroit. Volvo is reportedly working on a hybrid diesel version of the C30 which it will put on display sometime in 2007.

Pontiac

The history of the General Motors' Pontiac division starts as far back in 1908. That year, the Oakland Motor Company and the Pontiac Spring & Wagon Works Company merged to form the Oakland Car Company. The new company was poised to build the Cartercar when it was acquired by General Motors in 1909. GM originally intended for both of its new brands to sell cars; in 1932, it discontinued the Oakland brand.

In the early years, very little differentiated Pontiac from its Chevrolet sibling, with both offering (and competing) inexpensive to mid-priced coupes, sedans, and wagons. That changed in the '50s and '60s when Semon "Bunkie" Knudsen became the brand's general manager. Under his leadership, the Bonneville debuted and set the brand's current sporty reputation. Engineer and, later, automaker, John DeLorean also joined the division as well, further influencing its design direction.

The debut of the Pontiac Tempest and now famous GTO herald a change in American taste towards small, sporty, and powerful cars. Even the fuel crises in the Seventies did little to affect the brand's image.

Pontiac followed many of the current trends of its day with such vehicles as the fuel-efficient yet sporty Fiero and the Trans Sport minivan (now known as the Montana). In 2001, the brand unveiled the Aztek, one of the world's first crossovers. Unfortunately, reaction was so negative that it was forced to discontinue production in 2005.

In 2004, Pontiac debut the G6, the replacement of the Grand Am which was discontinued in 2005. GM, which had discontinued the Bonneville in 2005, revealed its and the Grand Prix replacement, the G8, at the 2007 Chicago Auto Show.

Nissan

Nissan Motor Co. Ltd, was established in 1933 in Japan. However, it did not start selling vehicles under its own name until 1981. Instead, it sold vehicles under the Datsun moniker: Datsun Sunny, Datsun 280ZX, and Datsun 510.

Beginning in 1981, Nissan began to sell vehicles under its own name. The first car sold under the Nissan name was the Nissan Bluebird. It went on sale in 1982 and was known as the Nissan Stanza in the U.S. Also in the Eighties, Nissan built its first U.S. plant in Smyrna, Tennessee, where it produced such SUVs and trucks like the Nissan Hardbody and Pathfinder. Later the plant would produce such cars as the Altima.

In 1989, Nissan created its Infiniti brand out of the remnants of its merger with Prince Motor Co. back in 1966.

Financial difficulties in the late '80s and '90s drove Nissan to form an alliance with French automaker Renault in 1999. Under CEO Carlos Ghosn, Nissan bounced back in the automotive market with its all-new Altima, Maxima, and new vehicles as the Nissan Murano crossover.

Currently the automaker is reacting to the "softening" of automotive sales, especially in the U.S. but also in Europe. Nissan continues to release new products such as the upcoming Altima coupe and GT-R Skyline. In 2006, General Motors approached Nissan about a possible alliance or even merger. GM later retracted the offer.

Mitsubishi

The Mitsubishi Motors origins can be traced back to the early 1900s when they introduced a Model A, the first series-production automobile manufactured in Japan. The vehicle was entirely hand built so it was much more expensive than the American produced vehicles and was discontinued by the 1920s. After merging with Mitsubishi Aircraft Company in the 1930s, they developed prototype vehicles for the military prior and during the war. After the War, they returned to producing vehicles for the general public and were fairly successful, yet the company wanted to increase exports and their strategy to do was to forge alliances with foreign automobile companies. From the 1970s onward they would partner with Chrysler, Hyundai, Volvo and many others, ultimately leading to their merger with DaimlerChrysler in 2005. Recent car defects and financial troubles in the Asian markets have decreased their sales, but a recent reorganization of the company and its vehicle lineup under direction from DaimlerChrysler has resulted in increased profitability and sales.

Audi

The first Audi was manufactured in 1910. Named after the Latin version of founder's August Horch's last name (Horch means 'Hark!' in German), the company later merged with DKW, Horch (whom August originally founded and was later ousted), and Wanderer to form the Auto Union. Audi's now well-known "interlinking rings" represents those companies.

In the mid 1960s, Daimler-Benz obtained controlling shares of Auto Union which it sold to Volkswagen. Today's Audi AG would emerge in 1969, when Auto Union merged with NSU, a motorcycle manufacturer, to form "Audi NSU Auto Union AG". The company would later drop the Auto Union and NSU from its official moniker. (Volkswagen continues to be the parent company.)

The Audi 100 was the new company's first cars sold to the masses. Later cars included the Audi 80 and Audi 50. A report on CBS on the 100 (renamed the Audi 5000 in the U.S.), temporarily damaged the brand's reputation. Audi was seriously considering leaving the U.S. until rising sales in the Nineties changed its mind. Today, the brand is one of Europe's strongest with sedans such as the A4, A6, A8 and roadsters such as the TT. The brand is also associated with all-wheel drive through its quattro system which it developed in the '80s. The S4, S6, and S8, which are more powerful versions of the A4, 6, and 8, respectively, use quattro.

In 2006, Audi introduced the Q7, its first full-sized SUV. Audi's latest "supercar", the R8, goes on sale in 2008.

Toyota

Toyoda Automatic Loom Works, Ltd., a loom manufacturing company, founded what later be the Toyota Motor Corporation in 1937. The family-owned company was looking to expand its business and saw automobiles as the means to do so.

The first Toyota vehicle to be sold to the U.S. market was the 1957 Toyota Crown. During the oil crisis in the '70s, Toyota, along with other Japanese automakers like rivals Honda and Nissan, offered fuel-efficient vehicles like the Toyota Corolla to the now gas strapped American public. Its most well-known car, the mid-sized Camry, started out as a compact in 1982.

Toyota began to expand into other automobile segments in the '90s. Well-known Toyotas include the 4Runner SUV; Celica and Supra sports cars; and the Tundra pickup. In 1984, Toyota and American automaker General Motors entered a joint venture and created the New United Motor Manufacturing, Inc. (NUMMI), an automotive plant, in Fremont, California. The plant, to Toyota, was its foothold into the American auto industry. Later, it would set up plants in other states like Alabama, Kentucky, and Texas.

In 1989, Toyota launched its Lexus division, arguable the best-selling luxury brand in the U.S. In 1997, the Camry became the number one best-selling car in the U.S., a title it continues to hold. Though not the first hybrid sold in the U.S. market (that honor goes to the now discontinued Honda Insight), the hybrid Toyota Prius debuted worldwide in 2000 where it continues to be synonymous with the word even now.

In 2007, the all-new Toyota Tundra went on sale in the U.S. Later that year, Toyota surpassed General Motors as the number one automaker in terms of quarterly sales.

Honda

The Honda Motor Co. was officially founded in 1948. First manufacturing motorcycles and scooters, which it continues to this day, it started to develop automobiles in the early Sixties. Primarily aimed at the Japanese market, the cars proved to be too small for the American public.

That changed with the introduction of the Honda Civic in 1972. Americans, facing the 1973 gas crisis, found the Civic to be extremely fuel-efficient. Honda was also one of the first automakers to manufacture automobiles to fully comply with the U.S. government's more strict anti-pollution laws. Honda would later introduce now standard technologies into its cars like four-wheel steering (Honda Prelude) and airbags (Acura Legend).

Honda, in 1982, set up its own manufacturing plants in the U.S. in Marysville, Ohio, the first Japanese automaker to do so. Honda would also found Acura in 1986, the first Japanese luxury brand, to compete against German luxury automakers such as Mercedes-Benz. Honda rivals' Toyota and Nissan would follow later with Lexus and Infiniti.

The Civic is Honda's most popular brand both in the U.S. and the world. Both the Civic and the Accord occupy the number two and three slots among best-selling cars in the U.S. right after the Toyota Camry. Other well-known Honda automobiles include the company's first hybrid, the Insight (now discontinued); CR-V (SUV); and Odyssey (minivan). In 2005, the company debuted its first pickup, the Ridgeline.

Honda has been tightlipped about its plans for 2007 and beyond. New vehicles include an all-new Accord as well as more hybrids. The automaker also looks to be returning to regain its "safety" reputation as well. Besides being the only automaker which displays its vehicles' safety rating on car stickers, it is standardizing many safety features such as side-airbags and anti-lock brakes on them as well.

Ferrari

Italian sports car maker Ferrari was founded in 1929 by Enzo Ferrari. Ferrari, who loved racing, originally created the company to sponsor amateur racers.

Called Scuderia Ferrari ("Ferrari Stable" or "Team Ferrari"), the company's first racecar, the Tipo 815, was built during World War II where it ran at the Mille Miglia. Unfortunately, both broke down during the endurance race.

Enzo Ferrari continued the company primarily to finance his love of the sport. The Model 166M won at 24 Hours of Le Mans, and the racing division has a record at nearly every Formula One event.

Ferrari sold the company to Fiat in 1969, though he retained control of the racing division until his death in 1988.

As one of the world's greatest sports car company, Ferrari has a long list of vehicles recognized by fans. The 1947 125 S (or 125 Sport) was the company's first car under the Ferrari banner. It debuted at the Circuito di Piacenza. Other well-known sports cars include the Supeamerica, GTS Spider, Maranello, various Dinos, Ferrari 360, 360 Modena/Spider, 612 Scaglietti, 512 Berlinetta Boxer, Testarossa, and, of course, the Enzo Ferrari. Future vehicles in the works include an all-new Dino set to debut in 2010 and a production version of the Ferrari 599 GTO Mugello

Suzuki

Suzuki Motors Corporation has its origins dating back to 1909. Founder Michio Suzuki, who created and headed the loom company, wanted to expand his business and thought the burgeoning automobile industry would be perfect. His plans, though, were stymied by World War II.

After the war, Suzuki continued with building and manufacturing looms until the cotton market crash in the early Fifties. Suzuki returned to the automotive industry by way of the Power Free motorcycle engine. Its success, and other vehicles, led to the company's new direction and name: Suzuki Motor Co. Ltd.

Though Suzuki started to sell bikes in the U.S. as early as the Sixties, the automaker would not bring over its first automobile until 1985 with the introduction of the Suzuki Samurai, a Jeep-like SUV. The Chevrolet Sprint, a hatchback which went on sale that same year, was a rebadged Suzuki Swift. Suzuki would not sell the Swift under its own name in the U.S. until 1989.

In 1981, Suzuki entered an alliance with General Motors and Isuzu. Besides the Chevrolet Sprint, Suzuki vehicles formed the basis for the Geo Metro and Geo Tracker. GM and Suzuki's purchase of automaker Daewoo yielded the Suzuki Forenza and Verona sedans. Recently, Suzuki announced it was retiring the Verona and would unveil a new flagship in 2009. A new Swift is also scheduled to arrive by the end of the decade.

Jaguar

Though established in 1935, the now Jaguar Car Company was originally the name of a car developed by the Swallow Sidecar Company in 1922. Founders William Lyons and William Walmsley would later rename the company.

Jaguar bought the Daimler car company in 1960 and, later, merged with the British Motor Corporation (BMC). The British government later separated it from British in 1984 where it was purchased shortly afterwards by Ford Motor Co. Ford would add the marque to its Premier Automotive Group (PAG) which was composed of Aston Martin, Land Rover, and Volvo. For a time, Lincoln was part of PAG but was removed in the early 2000s. Aston Martin was later sold to a consortium led by Prodrive.

Jaguars are known for two things: sporty luxury and reliablity (or lack of). It developed the former in the 1950s with a string of beautiful cars and wins at the Le Mans. The Seventies and Eighties were not kind to the brand, with Jaguars suffering notorious electrical issues.

Ford's ownership, though, and the subsequent funds had improved Jaguar reliability dramatically. In 1999, Jaguar brought back the S-Type, a retro remake of its 1964 sedan. A couple of years later, the all-new X-Type debuted. Based on the European Ford Mondeo, the small sedan was aimed as a competitor of the BMW 3-Series.

The brand has yet to develop a profit for its parent company. In late 2006, rumors were rampant that Ford planned to sell the marque. Instead, the U.S. automake sold Aston Martin, making way for Jaguar to move upscale in the PAG ladder. The all-new XK coupe and, later, convertible, have many analysts wondering if Jaguar has finally landed on its feet. The C-XF Concept, which may replace the S-Type, has also generated high hopes for the brand as well.
